TOP BATHROOM DESIGN TRENDS DOMINATING IN 2022

Updated: Sep 8, 2022

As we move through 2022, bathroom trends are dominated by modern and sleek designs. This means you will see a lot of clean lines, geometric shapes, and simple colors. In addition to traditional fixtures like sinks and toilets, you will see a lot of high-end options like rain showers and spa baths. Modern bathrooms that are both stylish and functional are using materials like ceramic tiles and glass wall panels.

But don't let's jump the gun yet, we've got your top bathroom trends of 2022 coming right up. But first, let's look at the trends that have been left behind in 2021.

Bathroom Design Trends That Are Being Left Back in 2021

Designers are pushing the envelope with new and innovative bathroom design trends in 2022, but what trends were left behind from 2021? Here are five bathroom design trends that haven't made their way into 2022.

  1. The all-white bathroom. White bathrooms have been popular for a while now, but they're starting to feel a bit stale. In 2021, expect to see more bathrooms with pops of color and interesting textures.

  2. The farmhouse sink. Farmhouse sinks are bulky and take up a lot of space, so they're not ideal for small bathrooms. In 2021, expect to see more sleek and modern sinks that save space and look chic.

  3. The clawfoot tub. Clawfoot tubs are beautiful, but they're also expensive and difficult to install.

  4. The use of excessive tile. In recent years, we've seen an increase in the use of tile in bathrooms. However, this trend is starting to lose its appeal. Too much tile can make a bathroom feel cold and uninviting.

  5. The use of floral patterns. Floral patterns may have been popular a few years ago, but they're starting to look dated now.

Where to Begin for Your Bathroom Renovation?

There's no need to be overwhelmed when starting a bathroom renovation. By following these simple interior design tips, you can get started on your way to the perfect bathroom.

First, consider your needs and what you want to change. Maybe there are specific features of your bathroom that you don't like, or maybe the layout just isn't working for you. What are your must-haves? Do you need a larger bathtub, or more storage space? Make sure to prioritize the features that are important to you. Figure out what needs to be changed and make a list of priorities.

Next, it's important to choose a designer. A professional will help you realize your vision and give expert advice on what will work in your space. Be sure to discuss your budget with your designer so they can help stay within your limits. Also consider who will be doing the work? If you’re hiring a builder or tradesperson, be sure to get quotes from several different companies and ask for references. If you’re doing the work yourself, be sure to read up on how to do it properly.

Finally, what style do you want your bathroom to be? Take into account current design trends when planning your renovation. Do you want a modern sleek look, or something more traditional? There are many great ideas out there that can completely transform your bathroom without breaking the bank.

What is trending in bathrooms in 2022?

Here's what's trending in bathroom design so far in 2022.

New take on the all-in-one shower & bath

We're not talking showers that are in the bath here, we're talking showers and baths together in the one wet area. Sometimes it might be executed as a wet room - but we're not so much talking about that here. Typically separated from the rest of the bathroom by a sleek glass panel divider, this is a modern take on an old space saver. Here's a top tip - add a luxe rain shower head to the mix, it's also a top trend in 2022.

Indoor-outdoor bathroom

Suited for warmer climates, but absolutely possible for temperate ones as well, merging your bathroom across inside and outside spaces is oh-so-hot right now. Outdoor showers and baths set amongst tropical greenery under a shady canopy amidst a tranquil garden oozes a zen spirit and promotes recharging of busy modern minds.

Freestanding basins

A freestanding bathroom basin is a great way to add a touch of luxury to your bathroom. They are perfect for those who want to create a more spa-like atmosphere in their home. Freestanding basins are also a great option for those who have limited space in their bathroom.

Simplified colour schemes

Simplified bathroom colour schemes are being achieved by using just a few colours in palette. For example, whites and grays with perhaps some variation in tone or hue in bathroom tiles and allowing for spots of colour in highlights or from furniture details or fixtures. This creates a clean and modern look. You could also add pops of color with accents such as towels or rugs.

Mixed and matched textures

By mixing and matching different textures, bathroom designers are creating spaces that are both stylish and functional. For example, pairing a sleek marble countertop with a rustic wood floor, or using textured wallpaper to add interest to an all-white space are both great examples from the interior design play book. By playing with different textures, you can create a bathroom that is truly unique and reflects your personal style.

Coloured concrete sinks

Coloured concrete bathroom sinks are adding unique touches to bathrooms in 2022. They are made from durable material that is easy to clean and maintain. Coloured concrete sinks are available in a wide range of colours and designs, so you can find the perfect one to match your bathroom décor and help with your colour and texture execution.

Stone and wood planked bathroom floors

Stone and wood planked bathroom floors are a trend that is not only stylish, but also very practical. Stone and wood floors are easy to clean and maintain, and they also have an unbeatable natural look that can help to create a relaxing atmosphere in your bathroom. If you are looking for a way to update your bathroom without spending a lot of money, then consider installing stone or wood floors.

It's all about the shower: rain showers, double showers and walk in showers

A hot trend for 2022 that's growing in popularity is rain showers. Rain showers create a more spa-like and indulgent experience and can be a great way to relax after a long day. Another hot trend that is gaining popularity is double showers. This allows two people to shower at the same time, or make showering for one indulgent, relaxing or even therapeutic.

Another popular trend for 2022 is walk-in showers. We're talking the no-door, or no shower screen shower here. It's often executed as wet area combo with a bath tub. Either way, they allow you to easily step into the shower without having to worry about opening a shower door or climbing over a high threshold or stepping on a slippery surface. They are also great for small bathrooms, as they take up less space.

Spa aesthetic

2022 is seeing a growing trend for bathrooms to have a spa-like aesthetic, with more and more people wanting to create a relaxing and luxurious space in their homes. This trend is set to continue in 2022, with even more innovative and stylish products hitting the market. Designers are incorporating features like heated floors and towel racks, as well as luxurious materials like marble and granite to create a spa-like space. We're also seeing more use of natural light, with large windows or skylights in airy spacious rooms.

Curved mirrors

One of the big bathroom trends in 2022 is curved mirrors. These mirrors add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any bathroom, and they can also help to make a small bathroom look larger. Curved mirrors add elegance and style to a bathroom. Here's a top tip: add strip lighting to the back of your curved mirror to add soft ambient lighting and generate a 3D effect for the mirror.

Bathroom skylights are very big in 2022. They are a unique way add natural light and ventilation to the room, making it feel larger and more open. They are also a great way to show off your style and creativity, as they can be customized in a variety of ways. Some people choose to have skylights that open, while others opt for skylights with built-in shades or blinds. As an added bonus, bathroom skylights can reduce energy costs by reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Backlit mirrors are a hit in 2022 as they make bathrooms look more elegant and luxurious. Backlit mirrors are illuminated from behind with LED strip lights, which create a soft, diffused light. This type of lighting is perfect for bathrooms, as it creates a relaxing and spa-like atmosphere.

They come in a variety of sizes and shapes, so you can find the perfect one for your space. Additionally, backlit mirrors can be customized to match your specific décor. Whether you're going for a traditional or contemporary look, there's a backlit mirror that will fit your style.

Bath caddies

They may not be as sexy as a walk-in shower or stone floor but bath caddies are definitely a hot trend in 2022. These caddies can be used to store all of your bath essentials, and they can also be used to decorate your bathroom by bringing in natural wood to the space. Perfect for free standing bath tubs, they're also a genius solution for resting your wine glass while you lay back and relax.

In wall toilets

2022's bathroom trends are definitely including in-wall toilets. Although this type of toilet has been around for a while, it is starting to gain in popularity as more and more people are realizing their amazing benefits. Here are just a few of them:

  1. In-wall toilets take up less space than traditional toilets, making them ideal for small bathrooms.

  2. They are easier to clean because the entire unit is hidden behind the wall.

  3. They are more stylish and modern looking than traditional toilets.

Staying with toilets, smart toilets are an ever growing trend in 2022. These toilets are equipped with features that make them more efficient and convenient to use. They often have a self-cleaning function, a hands-free flush, built-in bidet, heated seats, automatic flushing, and air drying. Some even have a music player.
